Politicizing the AZ shooting
Red State/Erick Erickson. Daily Kos/Markos Moulitsas. Rush Limbaugh. HuffPo. Sarah Palin. Gun Owners. Tea Party. Each of these will be blamed for the shooting over the next 48 hours.
In the minutes and hours after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot along with 11 others outside of a grocery store in Tucson, AZ, the media whores of America began placing blame as to who was ultimately responsible for the shooting. It took almost no time for folks on the right and left sides of the aisle to begin placing blame. As a political moderate, I follow news from both sides of the aisle. I watched twitter explode with the news of the shooting, the incorrect reports of Rep Giffords passing, the corrected reports of her being in surgery, and what kind of person the shooter was.
One of the more popular conservative names today is a guy named Erick Erickson. He founded the conserva-blog Red State and has since been hired by CNN and starts a radio show this week. He spent the morning yesterday posting tweets like this and this. His tone changed dramatically throughout the day with tweets like this, this and this. He should be ashamed of himself. On a day when he could have been a voice of reason and calm among his listeners/readers, he went out and kicked the hornet’s nest. Same with Markos Moulitsas. These people disgust me. Making a living by inciting anger and fear. What a wicked way to live.
Let’s be clear: I don’t know anyone who supports the use of violence in our political process. That doesn’t mean those people don’t exist, I just don’t know any of them. Is Sarah Palin responsible for the shooting? Doubtful. Did she show good judgement by using literal targets on a ‘hit list’ for her top 20 politicians to remove from office? Not at all. I think she’s a disaster of a political candidate, but this proves she isn’t nearly ready to lead anyone. Her judgement has been horrific, and the simple fact that she deleted the post in question from her website shows some sense of regret.
Here is what we should be discussing; the young man that shot these innocent people is truly mentally deranged. Guilty of the crime without question, but still bat-shit crazy. That is all we should be talking about. Not about whether or not he liked Palin, read Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto, or supported R’s or D’s. This guy murdered 6 people. Regardless of his political affiliation, no party can condone violence of any kind.
Instead of fanning the flames, I am hopeful that our media outlets will encourage unity over division.
